Contentment.pngDo you ever find yourself looking back on life and smiling at those moments when you used to get excited about something? Maybe you remember how you acted when you looked forward to owning your first car, or starting your first job, getting married or having your first child? In each season of life we have something new we are looking forward to – something that will give us a feeling of satisfaction and contentment.

The very fact that these “seasons” of life come and go opens our eyes to a very harsh reality. Nothing in this life lasts forever. We are continuously on a quest to find something new on this earth that will fulfill our every longing and desire, but in every attempt we fall short of finding it. We promise ourselves that if we could just get that promotion, then we would be happy. If we could just save enough monthly to buy that one item, then everything would be fine. If we could only have this one thing, then we would feel satisfied. But the lie that settles into our hearts always leaves us empty once we have attained “that” object or achieved “that” goal.

Jesus Christ has promised His children that if they seek Him, they will never come up short. They will never experience emptiness, but will understand what true contentment is in the Lord. They will know what it means to be satisfied.

“But godliness with contentment is great gain, for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world.” – 1 Timothy 6:6 – 7

Why in the world is this a comforting message? What good is it to have contentment at all if we cannot take anything with us when we die? The point that Paul is making is this, it’s not about the contentment of an object, but instead it is about the object you place your contentment in. If you place all the contentment in the world in an object that is going to deteriorate and fade away, what good was the contentment you had? But if you place your contentment and satisfaction in an object that will never fade away, then your contentment is not only worth while but a “great gain.”

Jesus Christ is the only One Whom we should place our contentment in because He will live forever! Not only is He here with us now, but He has promised to be with us forever into eternity. Nothing else we place our satisfaction in will live on into eternity. We brought nothing into this world and we cannot take anything out.

So worship Him this week and find true contentment in Him! He alone is able to fill your heart with a godly satisfaction that will last forever. So as we gather together and worship this week at Ventura Baptist Church in Holland, MI, we worship a God Who longs to fill our hearts with His glory so that we would be satisfied in Him and in nothing else! Praise our risen Lord and Savior!
