Tree“He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers. The wicked are not so, but are like chaff that the wind drives away.” (Psalm 1:3-4)

We considered last week that this psalm ultimately points us to Jesus, who perfectly lived this out, but we also see that because of faith in him, we can grow in following in His steps. As we look at this verse, we see that those who are righteous are like a secured tree that will only ever and always get nourishment. But those who do not trust God, will be blown away with the passing of time.

As I think about these words, I’m drawn to think of Jesus Who, for a time, seemed to “wither.” He died a crucifixion death. How is that prospering? But then I’m reminded of Philippians 2, which talks about Jesus’ descent from Heaven and becoming a servant of all to the point of death. But then, when it seems like all is lost, Paul says “Therefore, God has highly exalted him!” Even going through the most horrific event, Jesus prospers! And now for all who trust in Jesus, we have the same promise of prosperity – not as the world defines prosperity (i.e. – money, cars, toys), but eternal prosperity. Isn’t this astounding?

We were the ones who rebelled and yet God forgives, cleanses, strengthens those who come to Him for grace! And, by the way, He does this as we fill our minds with His truth. The verses preceding talk about us meditating on God’s Word day and night. Many times the reasons for our doubts and worries are because we’re not listening to God’s Word. We’re not preaching the truth to our hearts! But when we meditate and grow in the Word – even memorize it – our assurance rises! So, let these thoughts fill our minds this week as we worship. Let’s bask in the God Who suffered for us to rescue us from our sin. Let’s bask in the One Who strengthens our assurance in His Word!
