person-371015_6401 Timothy 2:5 says,

“For there is one God, and there is one Mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, Who gave Himself up as a ransom for all,”

Paul is writing this letter from his prison cell, and he is telling young Timothy, who is pastoring a small church in Ephesus, to pray to the One Mediator – Christ Jesus. What’s changed? Why is this statement so significant?

If you read through the Old Testament, you would acknowledge that there were many mediators between God and men. There were prophets, priests and kings who were to point the Israelite nation to the One true God.

If you lived in the Old Testament time period and you had a sick child or dying family member, you would travel miles to find a prophet of God. You may even journey cities away to find one and you would ask that prophet to intercede on your behalf and ask God to heal your loved one. The prophet would then inquire of God and would heal those in need.

If you lived in the Old Testament time period and you were sinned against or wronged by someone, you would travel to the capital and stand before the King in order to receive justice. The king, acting as sovereign judge, would then give you justice and condemn those who wronged you.

If you lived in the Old Testament time period and you sinned against God, you would travel to the place of worship and ask a priest to take an unblemished animal and offer it up as a sacrifice in your place so that you might be forgiven of your sins.

But now, Paul is telling Timothy that there is only one Mediator and His name is Jesus! Jesus Christ is the culmination of all the mediators in the past, present and future. HE is the perfect Prophet Who came and not only spoke and healed people but was the very Word of God made flesh. HE is the perfect King Who came to declare righteous those whom He loved and judge those whom rejected Him. HE is the perfect Priest Who does not offer up an animal for the remission of our sins, but is the sacrifice Himself that paid the penalty for our wrongs once and for all.

Jesus is the perfect Mediator between God and men, and He sits at the right hand of God interceding for His children. He desires that we come to Him at any moment, no matter where we are, to ask whatever it is we will in His name and He will grant it to us. You don’t need to travel miles anymore to find Him. He is with us. Pray from the prison cell. Pray from the hospital bed. Pray from the work cubical. Pray from your home. He listens to us and desires that we approach His throne of grace.

Consider this and rejoice! He is our God!
