Solid RockOne of my favorite hymns is The Solid Rock. One of the lines that I love says, “When all around my soul gives way, He then is all my hope and stay.” Then the song moves into the chorus and exclaims, “On Christ, the Solid Rock, I stand. All other ground is sinking sand.”

The point of the hymn is to show that only because of Jesus can anyone find security in this life. We often look to many things to give us stability – our jobs, morals, retirements, finances, etc. Even as people who proclaim that we follow Jesus, we can think that Jesus saved us, but we need to do more in order to make sure that we’re all set and good before God. This hymn reminds me of Paul’s words to the Ephesian church.

For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. – Ephesians 6:12-13

Paul talks about the spiritual warfare around us, and then says, “. . . take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm.” What’s phenomenal is that in this passage, we discover that all those weapons are given to us by God because of Jesus. And then we’re told to stand. Stand where? I believe this is a reference of dependence on God in Christ. When we stand firm on our Savior, we’re victorious. When we look to ourselves or to things around us, we’re on sinking sand.

So then, let’s confess who the Savior is and who the Savior isn’t. Let’s recognize our weakness, but also rejoice in his strength. And let’s pray that we’ll confess these truths with joy to one another and to the world around us.
